FAIRMONT —
Walter Gene Kendzior, 72, of Fairmont, passed from this life Monday (Jan. 7, 2013) at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg, after a brief battle with a very aggressive cancer.
He was born in Monongah, on Oct. 25, 1940, the only son of the late Walter Adam and Virginia Maxine Shaver Kendzior.
Gene was a Christian and member of the Monongah Baptist Church. He was a 1963 graduate of Fairmont State College with a degree in education. He later returned to school and became a designer of kitchens and bathrooms and remodeler.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served during the Vietnam War.
He enjoyed playing golf and most recently played in the United Way John Veasey Classic Golf Tournament; in high school he played football, basketball and baseball; in college he played intramural basketball and ran cross country; he loved to take drives through the countryside just to see where the road went; he was an avid sports fan at all levels, from high school through the pros; he was a fan of all types of auto racing and ever drove on some of the local tracks in his younger years. He recently took up the hobby of woodworking. He was an avid reader.
Mr. Kendzior is survived by his loving wife of more than 48 years, Sheila Stotler Kendzior; his daughter, Jennifer Kendzior of Bloomington, Ind., and her partner Jason Wright; two sisters, Carol VanMeter and her husband David of Monongah, and Kimberly Kendzior and her companion Paula Harr of Virginia Beach, Va.; three sister and brothers-in-law, Marquita and William Storms of Green Castle, Pa., Brenda and Joe Tucker of Newark, Del., and Avanell and William Klepper of Sequin, Texas; one brother-in-law, Dale Stotler and his wife Barbara of Fairmont; also his feline buddies, Crockett and Tubbs.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his in-laws, Clarence and Calantha Stotler.
In keeping with Mr. Kendzior’s wishes, his body has been cremated. Friends will be received at the Frey Home For Funerals (Addition Chapel), 320 Madison St., Fairmont, Friday from 9:30 a.m.-noon.
A memorial service will be held in the funeral home Friday at noon with Rev. Larry Buckland officiating and participation by family friends Rev. Barbara Bailey and Rev. Judy Fisher. Interment will follow at the WV National Cemetery with full military honors.
Gene’s family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the funeral home for dispersement at the family’s discretion: P.O. Box 895, Fairmont, WV 26555.
