Donald Fay Whitecotton

Donald Fay Whitecotton, 66, of McCurdysville, passed from this life early Thursday (Oct. 25, 2012) in his home under Hospice Care after a long battle with several types of cancer.

He was born in Fairmont on Nov. 27, 1947, a son of the late Theodore A. and Mildred M. Bartholow Whitecotton.

Don was Baptist by faith. He worked as an over-the-road truck driver for the W.S. Thomas Trucking Co. for several years.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and served two tours in Vietnam. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/device, RVN Cross of Gallantry w/palm, Vietnam Service Medal w/3*, Combat Action Ribbon and the Meritorious Unit Citation. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 629.

He enjoyed camping, fishing, watching football and westerns and working word puzzles.

Mr. Whitecotton is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Barbara Peck Whitecotton; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Lynn Ann and Ray McElfresh of Fairmont, Brenda Lee and Perry Funk of Monroe, Va., and Gail Marie Metz of Fairmont; one son, Donald A. Whitecotton of Arlington Heights, Ill.; two sisters, Shirley Louise Lockhart of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Betty Lou Lockhart and her husband James of Fairmont; two grandsons, Dakota Scott and Matthew Logan McElfresh; several nieces and nephews; also his best friend and his wife, Wendell and Lisa Hileman of Kingwood.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Theodore A. Whitecotton Jr., and one brother-in-law, Harvey Lockhart.

Donald’s family has suggested that memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at: USO, P.O. Box 96322, Washington, D.C. 20090-6322 or the charity of your choice.

Friends may call at the Frey Home for Funerals (Addition Chapel A), 320 Madison St., Fairmont, from 5-7 p.m. today. Services will be held in the funeral home at 7 p.m. with Pastor Joe Palmer officiating. The Marion County Honor Guard will present flag-folding services following the service. In keeping with Donald’s wishes, following the service his body will be cremated. His final resting place will be in the West Virginia National Cemetery at a later date.
