Ollie Ravenna Mowrey Taylor Currence, 96, of Fairmont, passed away Monday (Oct. 15, 2012) at her residence surrounded by her loved ones.
She was born Feb. 9, 1916, in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Herman L. and Alza Ellen Cooper Mowrey.
She also was preceded in death by her first husband of 58 years, Guy S. Taylor, who passed away in 1995; and by her second husband, LTC (Ret.) Homer Currence, who passed away in 2010.
Mrs. Currence was a member of the Colfax United Methodist Church for 65 years and enjoyed fellowship with her family and friends. She attended school through the eighth grade. She became a licensed beautician in 1938, working at her beauty shop in Spencer.
After moving to Colfax, she worked at the Jones Department Store beauty shop in Fairmont and worked from her home in Taylor’s Beauty Shoppe. In her free time, she volunteered at the Soup Opera and enjoyed cooking for her loved ones. God graced Mrs. Currence with a flourishing green thumb, and she surrounded her home with beautiful gardens and house plants. She was an avid bird watcher, expert at identifying the many different birds that visit her bird feeder.
Mrs. Currence was proud that her granddaughter Jessica chose to have her wedding at her house in Colfax in the summer of 2011. Most of all, she was a dedicated mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a devoted Christian.
Mrs. Currence is survived by one son, Guy Douglas “Doug” Taylor and his wife Charlotte of Indio, Calif.; one daughter, Rebecca “Becky” Taylor Martin and her husband Denny of Colfax; four grandchildren, Craig Taylor and his wife Jennifer, Sarah Martin, Jonathan Martin, and Jessica Wells and her husband Joshua; and two great-grandchildren, Samuel Taylor and Ellen Painter Taylor; granddaughter-in-law, Anne Painter; two stepsons, Alan Homer Currence of Hurricane, and Fayne Russell Currence of Manassas, Va.; and step-grandchildren, Michael Fayne Currence, Brian Todd Currence, Ginger Ann Currence and Rebecca Elyse Currence.
Many nieces and nephews, including special nephew Greg Mowrey and his wife Amy and special niece and traveling companion, Josephine Hinkle, also survive Mrs. Currence.
She was preceded in death by her son, Guy Lewis Taylor; grandson, Aaron Taylor; brothers, Orval Mowrey, Arnold Mowrey Arkie Mowrey and Richard Mowrey; sisters, Flora Carpenter, Edna Henry and Janice Mowrey; stepdaughters, Jan Currence and Karen Currence.
The family would like to give special thanks to Hospice Care and to caregivers Wanda Keener and Holly Smith for all of their care and support.
