Jon D. “JC” Smith

FAIRMONT — Jon D. “JC” Smith, 56, of Fairmont, passed away Saturday morning (June 23, 2012) after a courageous battle with cancer with his family by his side at the Cancer Center of America in Philadelphia.  

He was born in Charleston on July 4, 1955, a son of the late Stephen Ralph Smith and Raffilena Sestito Smith.

Jon retired June 12, 2012 from Consolidation Coal Co., Loveridge mine after 37 years of dedicated service. He was baptized Catholic at Immaculate Conception Church of Fairmont. He was a member of District No. 31, United Mine Workers of America. He enjoyed his entire family and loved being with them on every occasion. He loved cooking and had specialties such as preparing turkeys and JC’s “not so famous” crab soup. His passion was classic cars and WVU and Fairmont State sports and sports statistics as well as pro football. He made several trips to the annual Pro Bowl in Hawaii. He traveled extensively and went abroad and especially loved the ocean, preferably Ocean City, Md.

Survivors include his wife, Celia Boord Smith of Fairmont; a stepson, Tanner Dalton of Morgantown; one brother, Michael Smith and his wife Sandy of Fairmont; two sisters, Mrs. Lois Klingensmith and her husband Danny of Boothsville, and Mrs. Suzy Barnes and her husband Lewis of Morgantown; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Paul and Julia Boord of Port Marion, Pa.; uncles, Joe Sesito of Fairmont, and Jack Smith of Pittsburgh; an aunt, Dixie Sestito of Florida; and a sister-in-law, Jeanne Smith of Morgantown.

Nieces and nephews include David Smith, Kathy Bissett, Troy Smith, Shane Klingensmith, Molly Walters, Raffie Hamilton, Susan Woods, Sunny Barnes, Michael Smith and Dustin Barnes. Several great-nieces and -nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Stephen Smith; and a niece, Jennifer Watson.

Jon has chosen immediate cremation as his method of disposition. The family will receive friends at Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. A celebration of Jon’s life will be held in the funeral home at 2 p.m. Saturday with Father Jude Molnar officiating.
