Whaley, Bundy lead Polar Bears past Colts

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont Senior High School girls’ basketball team rolled past Philip Barbour on Monday evening, 65-43.

Throughout the tenure of the game, FSHS flexed its muscles, having three players score in double digits.

“All the girls played well,” Fairmont Senior head coach Corey Hines said. “We did a great job in the first two quarters while playing good defense.”

Feeding off passes from both Emily Stoller and Jenny Bundy, Kaden Whaley led all scorers with 23 points. Stoller tallied 14 and Jasmine Johnson drilled 12.

Right out of the gates, Stoller faked a pass to the right and then turned and drilled an assist to Kelsey Morrone for a quick two. Then Stoller wove her way through the Colts’ defense for a coast-to-coast bucket.

Whaley jumped into the action and so did Johnson. Before Philip Barbour could blink, they were down, 18-7.

“Sometimes when you get a big lead, you take more chances,” Hines said. “Defensively, it allowed us to set the tone early. We have a goal that we set that showcases how many points we want the other team to score. They exceeded that goal a little bit. We still put enough distance where I was very proud how we played defensively.”

During the opening possessions, FSHS was pressing the Colts while forcing five turnovers within a matter of three minutes.

Not only did the Polar Bears force turnovers, but Whaley and Johnson gave the Polar Bears second shot opportunities.

“We were able to get second shots because of the Jasmine Johnsons and the Kaden Whaleys,” Hines said. “You get a chance to use this as practice. You want to change up a little bit and keep the offense on their toes. We switched from man-to-man to zone and press — we switched a lot. Plus, I wanted to use that for practice.”
