Late three-pointer ends Bees’ season

PLEASANT VALLEY — Up 45-43 with two seconds remaining, members of the East Fairmont High School girls’ basketball team thought their dream was about to come true.

Just two seconds, and they would be advancing to the second game of the sectional tournament, going head to head in the crosstown rivalry game against Fairmont Senior on Wednesday.

But Weir’s senior point guard, Raven Young, had other plans Monday. She took two dribbles past the half-court line and fired off a three pointer.

Swoosh.

The three went in — nothing but net — and East was a culprit of another tough loss, 46-45.

“She got her feet set and squared her feet to the bucket and got a good release and it went in, thank God,” Weir head coach Bill Smith said.

On the flip side of the shot was East head coach Bill Malone. When the shot was in the air and went down, Malone didn’t know what to think.

“That shot just capped our season,” Malone said. “I saw the ball go up and I said to myself, ‘Oh no, don’t let it go in — catch some rim or something — anything.’”

With the loss, the Bees’ season is over; however, they played one of their strongest games of the year.

“I thought we played really good defense at that time,” Malone said. “We were doing what we needed to do and the girls did a nice job of picking them up.”
