BRIDGEPORT — Kevin Johnson doesn’t hesitate when asked his opinion of the Nationwide Tour’s stop at the Pete Dye Golf Club.
“It’s one of the best,” he said Tuesday afternoon after arriving here to prepare for the second Nationwide Tour Players Cup, which gets under way Thursday morning. “Purse-wise or not, it’s one of the best golf courses we play. It’s a really enjoyable golf course when you’re playing well, and it’s a nightmare when you’re a little off. I think that’s what Mr. Dye is all about.”
Johnson — a member of the Nationwide Tour in 1990, 1996-2000 and 2002-09 and the PGA Tour in 2001 — is the No. 2 money winner on the Nationwide Tour in 2009 with $253,455. This success has come after two down years. He ranked 208th last year with $6,479 and 142nd in 2007 with $28,550.
The winner of this week’s event takes home $108,000 of a total purse of $600,000. The figures were cut from $180,000 and $1 million because of challenging economic conditions this year.
Johnson, a three-time All-American at Clemson, admits his play this year has been “great, better than expected.”
