FAIRMONT — After a long spring break and inclement weather washing out several meets, the East Fairmont boys’ track team has been a bit slow in rounding into shape.
The Bees, however, took a step forward at Thursday’s Marion County Championship. They had four individual winners and put up 78 team points, well ahead of Fairmont Senior (55) and North Marion (40) for the title.
North Marion also finished with 78 points and edged upstart Fairmont Senior (65) and East Fairmont (25) in the girls’ race.
“Have a lot of experienced kids, a lot of seniors, and they’ve set good examples for the younger kids. We’re getting there,” East boys’ coach Ken Hibbs said.
Justin Speelman won a pair of events for the Bees, taking the 300 hurdles (43.65) and the long jump (18-6). Dustin Starsick won the 110 hurdles (15.82), and fellow senior Mason Bailey took the pole vault (8-6).
East won four other running events in the 400, 800, 3,200 and shuttle relays.
Fairmont Senior’s Marcus Jacquez was the top individual winner Thursday. The speedster captured titles in the 100 (11.54) and 200 (23.84) and added a field victory in the high jump (5-6).
Another Polar Bear, Christian Cummings, won both throwing events. He had a discus toss of 133-10 and added a throw of 47-4 in the shot put.
Other winners included North’s Tilmon Goines in the 400 (55.01) and Zach Tennant in the 800 (2:08.85) and Fairmont Senior’s Dayton McVicker in the 1,600 (4.56) and Patrick Stanton in the 3,200 (10:33).
On the girls’ side, Fairmont Senior freshman Alyssa Scherich won three events:the 200 (27.29), 400 (60.81) and 100 high hurdles (15.89).
Another ninth-grader, Brooklyn Little, won the 100 (14.01) and high jump (4-6).
“We’re a very young team. And the freshmen and sophomores have been standouts for us,” Fairmont Senior girls’ coach Amy Cunningham said. “I think if they do what we tell them to do in their workouts, there’s no reason a large number of them shouldn’t qualify for states and place at states.
“We have an exceptional group of girls. We probably have more talent than any of us coaches knows what to do with. It’s just a matter of them seeing the talent that we see. And once they start believing that, they’ll continue to excel.”
Other girls’ winners were North’s Cassy Menas in the 800 (2:32.96), Jordan McDonald in the 1,600 (5:37.50), Marcie Mason in the 3,200 (12:44), and Jessica Starcher in the shot put (30-2) and discus (83-7); Fairmont Senior’s Joni Koay in the 300 hurdles (51.82); and East Fairmont’s Kristen Talerico in the long jump (15-7).
