Huskies receive dose of bad karma
FAIRMONT — After last year’s loss at Rachel, a defeat that snapped North Marion’s long winless streak, the Huskies figured Elkins would look to exact some revenge Friday night.
The Tigers accomplished just that in gutting out a 24-23 victory. But the way it all happened— Cory Broughton nailing a 21-yard field goal as time expired — was tough to take for some.
“I told the kids after the game that’s karma to the max,” North coach Daran Hays said of Broughton, who missed an extra point in overtime during last year’s 36-35 loss at Husky Field. “They lost it on a kick in overtime last year to us and won it this year on a kick on the last play of the game.”
Down 14-10 at the half, North used touchdown passes of 80 and 37 yards to take the lead at 23-14. But in a game full of scoring changes and momentum swings, Elkins had an answer, needing six plays before Jerry Wilson found the end zone on a 1-yard scoring run to make it 23-21.
Working with a short field certainly helped. On the ensuing kickoff, Hays called for an onside kick but it didn’t travel the required 10 yards, giving the Tigers possession at the North 47-yard line.

Hays: Huskies turned the corner in ’09
Daran Hays thinks of himself as a perfectionist. So while part of the North Marion football coach is pleased with his team’s play in 2009, the other half views his first year in the eyes of a skeptic, always wanting a little more.
