FSHS boys win region; girls fall to UHS

By Mike Bowen

MORGANTOWN — Fairmont Senior’s boys’ soccer team is heading back to the state tournament for the first time since 2005.

Brooks Nucilli scored three goals, two in the first half, to lead the Polar Bears to a 3-0 shutout win over Wheeling Park in the Region I title game at University High School.

“We’re real excited,” FSHS head coach Jim DeNardi said. “The boys have had a long season. They’ve worked really hard to get where they are at right now. They deserve a shot at states.”

The Patriots came out strong in the first half, but the Bears’ defense held.

Keeper Corey Cleavenger made several saves early and kept the Patriots out of the net, keeping the Bears in position to win.

“Cory made a couple of saves early, but didn’t get a lot of pressure,” DeNardi said. “He made big saves when he had to.”

Nucilli’s first goal pretty much took the wind out of Wheeling Park’s sails.
