Showdown time

Polar Bears, Indians set for battle of unbeatens

FAIRMONT — Of all the possible storylines heading into Friday’s clash of unbeatens between Fairmont Senior and Bridgeport, one simple fact will likely decide the final outcome:

Can the Polar Bears stop the Indians’ vaunted running game?

The answer remains to be seen, but there’s little doubt as to how No. 4 Bridgeport (8-0) will carry out its game plan — with, well, one carry after another.

“There’s no secrets ... they’re going to run the ball, run the ball and run the ball,” Fairmont Senior coach J.L. Abbott said.

Fairmont Senior quarterback Logan Moore, who doubles as a starting defensive back, agrees.

“We know what they’re going to do — they’re going to run the ball — and that’s what we’ll be trying all week to stop,” he said.

But for everything the second-ranked Polar Bears (8-0) have seen and heard about their latest opponent, this week’s film sessions provide a first glimpse. While Fairmont Senior-Bridgeport has been on the minds of fans and media for some time, Abbott steadfastly avoided such talk until after Friday’s road win over Wheeling Park.
