Polar Bears pound Indians, 76-50: PHOTOS

FAIRMONT — Against one of the top teams in the Big 10, Fairmont Senior’s boys’ basketball team picked a perfect time to play one of its better games this season.

The Polar Bears ran wild in the third period, using a huge run to break open a tight game en route to a 76-50 romp over visiting Bridgeport at the Woody Williams Armory.

Fairmont Senior (12-3) has won nine in a row and 12 of its past 13 games.

On this night, the Polar Bears did it with defense. Up by five, 32-27, at halftime they forced turnovers and their transition game to turn the game around in the third.

In all, Fairmont Senior had a 26-10 scoring edge in the quarter and built a 58-37 lead by period’s end.

Travon Horton fueled the surge. He scored 20 in the second half, 14 and seven baskets in the third alone, and finished just one point shy of his career high with a game-best 30 points. The senior foward did all this despite playing with a bandaged left wrist after suffering an injury last week.

Jarin Hilson added 18 — he had 14 points, including three 3-pointers in the first half — while DeVante’ Waites chipped in 16.

Tyler Sprouse led Bridgeport (9-5) with 14 points, and had just three in the second half. The Indians had their seven-game winning streak snapped in the process, a run that began after an overtime home loss to FSHS earlier this month.

Fairmont Senior is back in action Thursday when it hosts county rival East Fairmont.
