Critical stretch

FSU begins three-game home series tonight

FAIRMONT — Fairmont State men’s basketball is hosting three competitive schools this week — Pitt-Johnstown, Alderson-Broaddus and West Liberty.

“It’s a huge three-game stand,” Fairmont State head coach Jerrod Calhoun said. “There is still a lot of games left in our conference, so the league title is still up for grabs. Obviously, having four out of five games at home should help us.”

The first of the three-game series begins tonight as the Falcons collide with Pitt-Johnstown — a team coming off a huge win, 82-72, on Saturday at Charleston.

“Our guys have to understand that (Pitt-Johnstown) is a confident bunch,” Calhoun said. “Anytime you can go at Charleston and win is a huge confidence builder. So our guys have to be prepared and ready to go.”

Pacing the Mountain Cats is their star point guard in Nick Novak. Novak is a player who can bring the table when playing his role. So far this season, the senior has tallied 22 points per game, seven assists and nearly four rebounds per game.

Last season, he was named First-Team All-WVIAC, knocking down 19.5 points per game.

He also became the 23rd Mountain Cat to reach the 1,000-point plateau.

“Novak, their point guard, is probably one of the top two or three point guards in the country,” Calhoun said. “He’s averaging 22 points and seven assists. He’s a very, very good player and has been in this conference for four years. He’ll be one of the guys who’s up for player of the year. He makes them go on offense, but they’re very balanced.”

While Novak’s at the helm of Pitt-Johnstown’s offense, they are guided with four

other players who also score in double figures — Jordan Miller, who’s averaging 14.2 points per game; Bill Luther at 12; Andrew Cressler at 10; and Ian Vescovi at 10 points per game.
