It’s a gift the state did not want to unwrap as frosty weather approaches.
Once again, West Virginia nearly tops the list in the prevalence of Type II diabetes cases, which now can be found in more than 10 percent of the adult population.
The state is in the same category as Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas as the places where more than 10 percent of the population has been diagnosed with diabetes, according to data recorded in 2010.
In West Virginia, that figure is 10.4 percent, beaten only by Mississippi with 11.7 percent, Alabama with 11.3 percent and Tennessee with 10.6 percent of the adult population diagnosed with diabetes. South Carolina and Texas were a little below at 10 percent even.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (www.cdc.gov) reported the findings in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) on Nov. 15.
In West Virginia, the rate has risen dramatically since 1995, from 4.5 percent of the adult population 17 years ago to 7 percent in 2000 and 9.6 percent in 2005, before reaching the 10-plus percentage mark in the CDC’s latest findings from data collected in 2010.
The West Virginia Diabetes Prevention & Control Program (www.wvdiabetes.org) states that 229,379 people have diabetes in the state and that about 62,162 of them are undiagnosed. And the CDC estimates that 20 million Americans have pre-diabetes, the website states.
