FAIRMONT —
The third and final phase of the City of Fairmont’s pay plan adjustments was approved at Tuesday’s city council meeting.
The adoption of the ordinance will provide an increase in the base salaries of firefighters, department heads and certain unclassified positions. Steelworkers, water/wastewater operators, electricians and police lieutenants are among the other employees who have already received base pay increases. In September, an ordinance that awarded members of the fire department and department heads with a one-time cash payment in the amount of $750 (set to be payable by Dec. 31, 2012) was approved, but changes in the other post-employment benefits allowed for that ordinance to be repealed and the base salary increase to be passed.
According to City Manager Jay Rogers, prior to July 1, the cost for post-employment benefits such as health care and retirement for each employee per month was around $950. Now, that cost is down to approximately $90.
