FAIRMONT —
It’s fitting that the Family Services of Marion and Harrison Counties is located on Locust Avenue right between Fairmont General Hospital and Fairmont State University.
A United Way of Marion County member agency, it provides education and counseling for families struggling with domestic discord and care for seniors who would otherwise not be able to continue to live on their own.
“(Our) mission is to help families solve problems or prevent problems from happening,” said Carolyn Jones, executive director.
When the agency started in 1912, it functioned as a kind of “community chest” for the families of deceased coal miners in the community. Counseling was always a part of what they did, Jones said, but in 1973 it really became the core of what Family Services is all about.
