MANNINGTON —
The month of December is less than 24 hours away, and communities across Marion County are planning their Christmas celebrations.
The City of Mannington will host its Simple Gifts Celebration this Saturday.
Rana Taylor, executive director of Mannington Main Street, said the celebration will start with a ceremony at 5 p.m. at Citizen Square to put purchased bulbs on the city’s Christmas tree.
“We paint the names of their loved ones on (ornaments),” she said. “They’ll read the names and then ring a bell, then hang the ornament on the tree.”
This is the second year for the ceremony, and Taylor said it’s been successful.
“Last year we had a good bit of ornaments sold,” she said. “We got started a little bit late this year, but it’s still a nice turnout.”
Taylor said the ornaments can be purchased for $5 each until the ceremony starts.
Lineup for the city’s Christmas parade also starts at 5 p.m., with the actual parade starting at 6 p.m. Lineup will start at Mannington Middle School.
Taylor said that as of Thursday, there were about 30 entries lined up to be in the parade. She said she was glad to see more floats coming out this year.
