The Union Mission’s annual Thanksgiving dinner is a blessing for those in need in the community as well as the volunteers who make it happen.
Volunteer Patti Batten, who is married to Union Mission executive director Pastor George Batten, said the organization worked for at least two weeks to get ready for this free holiday feast.
Before Thanksgiving day, the cooks had to pre-cook the 68 turkeys, get all the pumpkin pies ready and pre-slice the rolls. But most of the actual cooking — including preparing the green beans, sweet potatoes, dressing and more — occurred on Thursday, Batten said.
She said the cooks started working about 6 a.m., and the rest of the volunteers came to the Union Mission, located on Jefferson Street in Fairmont, around 9 a.m. The team anticipated serving about 100 people in the facility’s dining room.
