Last month, students at East Fairmont High School were already thinking about the general election.
Cheers resonated throughout the EFHS auditorium on Oct. 25 as a group of students acting as the presidential candidates, vice presidential candidates and their families walked down the aisle.
The candidates shook hands while they worked their way to the stage for the school’s mock political rally.
EFHS seniors acted in the roles of the presidential candidates, delivering messages of promise and hope. Speeches were prepared and written by the students themselves, who based their commentary on what was discussed in the debates as well as what was covered on each candidate’s website. Teachers then judged and selected students based on how well they performed their roles.
While the candidates presented their speeches, they were happy to see that the students were getting the message.
“I really enjoyed it,” said senior Drew Edwards, who acted as President Barack Obama. “I’m a registered Democrat, so it was cool to be able to portray the president and be able to help our other seniors as well as the underclassmen to understand the platform that he’s on as well and how it will affect us.”
Edwards said he has been interested in the election. Over the past several months, he has been following the campaign, knowing he would be voting for the first time today. Being on stage and expressing the candidate’s stance on a multitude of topics, Edwards said it was a nice change of pace to hear the candidates’ plans without the negativity commonly seen against both parties on the campaign trail. It also helped make it easier for his classmates to understand the candidates’ positions.
