Parent challenges expulsion of student

Argues there are ‘no set guidelines’ in zero-tolerance laws

FAIRMONT — A parent is suing the Marion County Board of Education after her son was expelled from school.

The expulsion hearing took place at the Central Office of Marion County Schools on Sept. 10 and was closed to the public because the case involved a student.

Superintendent of Schools Gary Price recommended that the student be expelled for one school year for violation of the Safe Schools Act. The board members voted 5-0 to approve the recommendation.

Following the decision, board member Mary “Sis” Murray told the student, “I believe you are really remorseful for what you said. But I do want you to understand that many times people say things that can’t be taken back. I think that you need to think about that.”
