Eager to help

Ila Fortney longtime volunteer for church, community

COLFAX — Ila Fortney served many years as the postmaster in Colfax. She also taught and had many positions at Colfax United Methodist Church and worked hard at the Colfax community center.

Ila Fortney is the Times West Virginian’s “Everyday Hero” for this week.



Belongs to WSCS

Ila Fortney has always enjoyed helping people. She’s done it all her life.

“I belong to our WSCS at the church,” she notes. “When we hear of a need through the organization, we get together in the church and solve any needs that we can. But a lot of people won’t let you know when they really need help. And now that I’m not as active in getting out into the community as I would like, I don’t always hear about people’s problems and needs.”

She said that “people should come to the church or let me know. But they kind of hesitate. So we don’t get to do it as much as we would like to.”

Ila says she loves to read.

“That’s my biggest thing. But life is just wonderful. God has helped me through a lot of days that I don’t feel as well as I should. But he comes along and lets me sing. If someone would come to the door, they would think I was crazy, to hear me singing in my house.”

    Five dogs, a mother and four puppies, are dead after being shot and left to die in Rachel. Marion County officials are investigating.

    Snow arrived just in time this week as the West Virginia University Children’s Hospital Gala gets under way with the theme “It’s a Winter Wonderland.”
    Organizers chose that theme to herald the return of the event to its original Valentine’s Day weekend time slot after it was held during the spring for the past two years.

    A Fairmont man has been indicted by the Office of the United States Attorney Northern District of West Virginia on a child pornography charge.
    Clyde Bates, 67, was named in a one-count indictment charging him with possession of child pornography in Fairmont on Aug. 27, 2010.

  • Man indicted on 14 counts of sexual abuse

    A Mannington man has been indicted by the Marion County grand jury on 14 counts of sexual abuse.
    James Edward Carpenter, 34, of 100 Parkview Drive, Apt. 101, Mannington, is charged with four counts of first-degree sexual abuse and 10 counts of sexual abuse by parent, guardian or custodian.
