County digs out from ‘devastating’ storm

Cancellations reported as area braces for more snow

FAIRMONT — Thousands of people recovering from the weekend snow storm should brace themselves for the weather ahead, Marion County officials said.

The National Weather Service forecasts at least 6 inches of snow on Tuesday. The NWS issued a winter storm watch for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Marion County’s Office of Emergency Services is urging people to make provisions for the upcoming storm.

Meanwhile, a State of Emergency has been in effect since Friday. Roads in many parts of the county were covered with ice, snow and tree limbs until late Sunday, and Allegheny Energy crews were busy restoring power to thousands of homes.

Classes are canceled today for all public schools in Marion County.

The Marion County Courthouse is closed today except for the circuit clerk’s office, which must remain open to receive any important legal documents that may be deadline sensitive, said Marion County Commissioner Burley “Butch” Tennant.

Fairmont State University will remain open, according to the FSU Web site.

West Virginia University canceled classes today, though the men’s basketball game between the sixth-ranked Mountaineers and No. 2 Villanova will take place as scheduled tonight.

    A Fairmont man has been indicted by the Office of the United States Attorney Northern District of West Virginia on a child pornography charge.
    Clyde Bates, 67, was named in a one-count indictment charging him with possession of child pornography in Fairmont on Aug. 27, 2010.

  • Man indicted on 14 counts of sexual abuse

    A Mannington man has been indicted by the Marion County grand jury on 14 counts of sexual abuse.
    James Edward Carpenter, 34, of 100 Parkview Drive, Apt. 101, Mannington, is charged with four counts of first-degree sexual abuse and 10 counts of sexual abuse by parent, guardian or custodian.
