Temperatures forecast to plunge throughout day

FAIRMONT — The area braced for heavy snowfall as the rain poured from the sky Friday.

Predictions of snow proved to be accurate after dark, when the white stuff began to fall. The earlier rain quickly became a thick blanket of heavy, white snow.

According to the National Weather Service’s Web site, www.weather.gov, Marion County is set to receive 6-10 inches of snow before Saturday morning, then an additional 3-5 inches during the day Saturday.

Complicating matters are the plunging temperatures. While the temperature hovered above freezing while rain fell from the clouds Friday, the temperatures were predicted to drop below 30 degrees overnight. According to the NWS, today’s high temperature is predicted to be 29 degrees, with temperatures dropping to 22 degrees before 5 p.m. today.

    Organizers chose that theme to herald the return of the event to its original Valentine’s Day weekend time slot after it was held during the spring for the past two years.

    A Fairmont man has been indicted by the Office of the United States Attorney Northern District of West Virginia on a child pornography charge.
    Clyde Bates, 67, was named in a one-count indictment charging him with possession of child pornography in Fairmont on Aug. 27, 2010.

  • Man indicted on 14 counts of sexual abuse

    A Mannington man has been indicted by the Marion County grand jury on 14 counts of sexual abuse.
    James Edward Carpenter, 34, of 100 Parkview Drive, Apt. 101, Mannington, is charged with four counts of first-degree sexual abuse and 10 counts of sexual abuse by parent, guardian or custodian.
