Health department officials hearing ‘positive comments’ regarding renovated space

FAIRMONT — Employees at the Marion County Health Department have been in their newly renovated building for 2 1/2 months now, but on Friday, about 150 to 200 people attended an open house to dedicate the space.

“I was very pleased with our turnout,” said administrator Lloyd White. “It was much more than I expected.”

One visitor helped illustrate the updated amenities at the facility when she arrived in a wheelchair. The newly installed elevator allowed her to get to the second floor, where the festivities were taking place.

“Prior to this, there is no way she could have come on to the second floor,” White said. “It gives us total handicapped accessibility.”

The $1.635 million project, which was started at the first of the year, also has given both employees and visitors to the health department a more convenient and “professional” place to visit to get provided services, White said.

Changes include the expansion of the facility’s two exam rooms to four as well as the addition of two waiting rooms, one larger and one smaller. This gives patients privacy when learning test results.

Employees moved around the beginning of July and they, too, are pleased with upgrades, White said, which also included infrastructure changes to the heating and cooling systems as well as a redesign of office spaces.
