Former Grant Town mayor pleads ‘not guilty’

To felony counts of embezzlement, forgery and uttering

FAIRMONT — A former mayor of Grant Town pleaded “not guilty” to nine felony counts in his arraignment on Thursday in Marion Circuit Court Division II before Judge David Janes.

Robert Dale Riggs Jr., 41, of 101 View St., Grant Town, had been indicted by a Marion County grand jury earlier this month on one count of embezzlement, four counts each of forgery and uttering, all felonies.

Represented by attorney Fran Whiteman, Riggs is set to go to trial Wednesday, Nov. 28, in front of Judge Janes.

Whiteman moved to continue bond posted at magistrate court but told Janes she may later ask for a continuance of the trial.

“But for the time being, we would like to remain on the calendar,” she told the court.
