FAIRMONT —
Cathy Reed-Vanata, a Democrat, is running for re-election for magistrate for Marion County.
The lifelong Fairmont resident is seeking her fourth term as magistrate, having served in the Marion County court system for the past 33 years. She began working in the magistrate clerk’s office in 1979 after studying criminal justice at Fairmont State for three years.
“Since May, I have truly realized how much I value my job,” she said.
“There was this gentleman who was heading down the wrong path. I had worked and worked with him, and now he’s doing much better. His attitude turned around completely.
“That helps me remember that I do have an impact and can help people. That is my blessing. In my line of business, you don’t get too many thank yous or positive updates.”
Hers is not a 9-to-5 job, she said.
“When I’m on night duty, I’m here all through the night. My goal is to keep the men and women in Marion County safe. You have to love what you do and be passionate. This is a very complicated job. You don’t realize this until you see it on a day-to-day basis.”
She falls back on her years of experience for “good common sense and wisdom,” she said.
“You determine what is going to happen to that person’s life. You have to have good people skills and good sense, be a good judge of people, and be fair and have integrity … and know the law on top of everything,” she said.
