FAIRMONT —
Although a funding request from the city of Mannington has yet to be approved, the Marion County Commission has already indicated their interest in assisting financially.
The West Virginia State Council Vietnam Veterans of America has started a project to construct a West Virginia State Council Vietnam Veterans Mobile Wall that will eventually travel to every county throughout the state.
Names of 771 West Virginia veterans who served in the Vietnam War will be listed on the wall.
Project costs are estimated to be about $20,000, between the wall and the books scheduled to be published. So far, they have raised approximately $7,000, according to Mannington Mayor Robert Garcia, and of the $20,000, $14,000 will be used just toward getting the project started. Once the funding goal is reached, construction will take up to 12 weeks.
Commissioner Randy Elliott explained on Wednesday morning during the commission meeting that it would be a small replica of the memorial wall in Washington, D.C.
“I have had the privilege of seeing the wall in D.C., and it’s something,” Elliott said. “It’s an incredible sight. It’s obviously a very worthwhile project, and I think that we can come up with something.”
County attorney Chuck Shields will look over the project details before a final decision is made.
