FAIRMONT —
It’s a familiar position for Mike Caputo, running in his eighth election as a Democratic incumbent for the House of Delegate’s and ninth election overall.
Caputo grew up in Rivesville, graduating from Rivesville High School in 1975.
After high school, Caputo went to work in the coal mines.
“I started working at the Federal #2 mine in the Blacksville area,” he said “Worked there for almost 21 years.”
Caputo still resides in Marion County with his wife Tina Thorn and is a former member of the Rivesville city council.
After almost 21 years in the coal mines, Caputo then went to work for the United Mine Workers of America. He started as an organizer for the union then worked his was up to become political action director for West Virginia.
“Then I became political action director for the five eastern states,” Caputo said. “Now I serve as an international vice president for my union and sit on the executive board.”
In the early 1980s, Caputo got into politics by serving a brief stint on Rivesville city council. In 1995 he ran in his first election for a House seat.
“In 1995 the West Virginia legislature passed a workers’ compensation reform that we thought was very unfair and unfriendly to workers,” he said. “A lot of folks in the working class and labor movement were trying to recruit people to seek office at that time.”
Caputo was approached and was asked if he was interested in running. It wasn’t something that he had a burning desire for but decided to run.

Capias arrest warrant issued for Shaquille Lewis
A capias arrest warrant has been issued for Shaquille Lewis, the 19-year-old cousin of William Horton.
Lewis had been subpoenaed to testify at his cousin’s trial, which ended Friday in a four-count “not guilty” verdict. -
