Programs with low, declining enrollments scheduled to be closed

CLARKSBURG — At Thursday’s meeting at the Gaston Caperton Center, Fairmont State University’s Board of Governors approved the closure of programs with low and declining enrollments.

According to Christina Lavorata, provost and vice president for academic affairs, the resources that are currently being put toward these programs may be better utilized in other areas.

“We have different programs that have had low enrollment and declining enrollment and are not really strongly valued in the employment sector,” Lavorata said. “Students graduate from these programs likely because they are interesting and then they find out that they are not really employable in the public schools.”

Those programs that will be closed once current students who are enrolled matriculate through and graduate will be Business Education, Computer Science, Family and Consumer Science and School Library Media. These programs are in the School of Education, Health and Human Performance.

Lavorata said that the financial and human resources that are currently involved in these programs will be used to focus on the development of new programs where enrollment can be built.
