Downtown demolition project is ‘going well’

Fairmont Theater has been documented

FAIRMONT — Demolition and utility workers have turned the 400 block of Adams Street into a beehive of activity.

By the end of the year, the entire east side of the 400 block will be razed to make way for a new state building.

On Feb. 20, 2009, the state Department of Administration decided to close the West Virginia State Office Complex on Adams Street because of structural problems. Since that time, work has been going on to acquire property for a new building and get the old one torn down.

In April 2010, the county acquired the Fairmont Theatre property in the middle of the 400 block of Adams Street for $200,000, which was the first official step in the project to replace the state building. The Marion Regional Development Corp. has worked with other property owners to acquire the land not already owned by the city or county that was necessary for the project to move forward.
