FAIRMONT — An East Fairmont High School student was killed in an ATV accident Sunday.
Tina Marie Yost, 17, of Fairmont, was riding an ATV with a male passenger when the pair lost control of the vehicle while crossing a bridge over Buffalo Creek in Rachel. The teenagers fell more than 30 feet into the water below.
Emergency personnel said Yost died as a result of injuries sustained in the fall. She was not wearing a helmet.
The male passenger, a juvenile, was taken to Fairmont General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. His name has not been released to the media.
Yost recently completed her sophomore year in high school and she was by all accounts an active student. She played the piccolo and flute as a member of the Busy Bee Band & Honeybees. She was a former member of the East Park Elementary girls basketball team and the East Fairmont Junior High School track and volleyball teams.
“Tina was a very nice young lady. She was very active in the band and other groups,” said Dave Nuzum, principal at EFHS. “Tina was a caring individual, and was dedicated to school and was a very good student. She was a very likable young lady that will truly be missed at our school.”
EFHS band director Earl McConnell said he had taught Tina in band classes since she was in sixth grade.
