FAIRMONT — City Manager Jim Snider is interviewing for a job as city administrator in his hometown of Canton, Ill.
Snider, 50, is one of two finalists for the position that will assist the mayor in managing a city with a population of nearly 16,000 people. He served as assistant to the mayor of Canton from 1997 to 2001.
“There were those in Canton who asked me to apply. It’s my hometown. I just wanted to explore this opportunity,” said Snider in a telephone interview from Canton on Monday a few hours before he and the other finalist met with area business leaders, city staff and the public during an informal reception.
Canton approved hiring a city manager for between $70,000 and $80,000 annually during its most recent budgeting process, according to news reports.
Snider has 12 years of experience in municipal management. He served as city manager in Kewannee, Ill., from 2006-08 before Fairmont hired him about a year and a half ago at an annual salary of about $75,000.
