UPDATE — Witness tells Congress how US taxes evaded abroad

WASHINGTON — A man wanted by Liechtenstein for leaking secret banking information that identified millionaire tax cheats across Europe and the United States has told congressional investigators how money was concealed.

Lawmakers played a videotape of testimony by Henrich Kieber at a congressional hearing Thursday. Kieber has never spoken publicly about his role in exposing tax shelters that he says were used by Liechtenstein’s LGT group.

He described shell companies and fake transactions used “to make it extremely complicated for law enforcement agencies to follow the trail.”

Investigations linked to LGT have been launched in several countries since German authorities obtained a CD-ROM with details of accounts.

Kieber is in a witness protection program.

    A Fairmont man has been indicted by the Office of the United States Attorney Northern District of West Virginia on a child pornography charge.
    Clyde Bates, 67, was named in a one-count indictment charging him with possession of child pornography in Fairmont on Aug. 27, 2010.

  • Man indicted on 14 counts of sexual abuse

    A Mannington man has been indicted by the Marion County grand jury on 14 counts of sexual abuse.
    James Edward Carpenter, 34, of 100 Parkview Drive, Apt. 101, Mannington, is charged with four counts of first-degree sexual abuse and 10 counts of sexual abuse by parent, guardian or custodian.
