Exercise physiologist Chris Hedio recalled one client who came into the cardiac rehabilitation program at Fairmont General Hospital’s HealthPLUS Fitness Center, formerly the HealthPlex, and let him know she did not want to be there.
“She was just very resistant,” Hedio said. “She said, ‘I do not want to do this. I don’t know why I’m here. I feel fine.’”
By the time the program ended, however, the patient did not want to leave.
“She said if she could, she’d continue going the rest of her life,” Hedio said. “She felt she was good in the beginning, but she felt twice as good when she left.”
Encouraging people to improve their heart health is the goal of Hedio and his colleagues at Fairmont General. Those who want some tips and guidelines can attend a presentation by Hedio, cardiologist Dr. David Tingler, clinical pharmacist David Meyer and cardiac rehab nurse Yvonne Hershman.
“I Heart My Heart” will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Fairmont State University Falcon Center in conference rooms 2 and 3, in conjunction with National Heart Month and Go Red for Women.
Hedio will discuss the cardiac rehab program. Most patients who participate take 36 classes, three times a week, during a 12-week period.
“I set up their exercise program and I make sure they are working within their means and a high enough level to get their heart working,” Hedio said.
