Since 1976, February has been recognized as Black History Month in the United States and serves as a time to honor the accomplishments of African-Americans throughout history.
Area schools have been taking the time to celebrate this month by dedicating time to studying the roles that African-Americans have played in the development of our country and society.
Fairmont Senior High School principal Chad Norman said that The Aubrey Stewart Project was presented to the entire student body earlier this month. The mission of the project, which was also presented to students at East Fairmont High School and West Fairmont Middle School, is to spread the word of Aubrey Stewart, an African-American soldier who volunteered to serve in World War II and became a hero.
