Town receives federal grant

$3.2M will be used for repairs to sewer system

By J. Miles Layton

WORTHINGTON — Courtesy of the federal government, Worthington will receive a $3.2 million grant to repair and upgrade the town’s sewage system.

Mayor Edgar Burley said the town applied for the grant more than two years ago. The grant will pay for repairs and upgrades to the wastewater treatment plants and sewage lines. The town’s sewer system serves many neighboring towns, including Carolina, Idamay and Kellytown as part of the Greater Marion Public Service District.

“Our sewer system is too small and won’t take flows from neighboring small towns,” Burley said. “With these upgrades, we expect to more than double our sewage capacity.”

Burley said the total cost for Worthington’s project is $4.7 million with the remaining $1.5 million to come from another grant that has yet to be announced. He said construction will begin in the early part of next year.
