FAIRMONT — An effort to preserve Marion County black history is being bolstered by the board of education.
The Greater Fairmont Council of Churches created a committee about a year ago to preserve black history in the county. Since then, the group has received an $8,000 grant from the state board of education to do programs that promote, educate and exhibit the history and heritage of black history in Fairmont and Marion County. The Marion County Board of Education is acting as the pass-through agency, meaning the money will actually be distributed to the group through the MCBOE.
The council will provide another $2,000 for the effort, bringing the total funding to $10,000.
“I’m impressed we will be able to preserve an important part of Marion County’s history before it is gone,” Superintendent of Schools Tom Deadrick said. “We will do all we can to help facilitate this.”
