‘Storm you see every 10 years or so’

More than a foot of snow falls in area

FAIRMONT — Winter came a couple days early as more than a foot of snow fell on North Central West Virginia, prompting the governor to declare a state of emergency, canceling activities including Fairmont State University’s winter commencement and causing cars to slip and slide on area roads.

The nor’easter, which one meteorologist called “a storm you see every 10 years or so,” also slowed down shopping on the last Saturday before Christmas. Neither Meadowbrook Mall nor Morgantown Mall completely closed, but business definitely slowed down.

“We’ve had a fair amount of shoppers. Not as many as we would like to see on this Saturday, but I think it was worthwhile opening,” said Jenny McMillen, marketing director at Morgantown Mall in Granville.
