Jayenne’s Joseph Obuchowski wins statewide essay contest

By J. Miles Layton

FAIRMONT — A local kindergarten student has won a statewide $500 scholarship for writing an essay about his future.

“When I grow up, I want to be an engineer,” writes Joseph Obuchowski, 6, of Jayenne Elementary. “I have to go to college to learn about dirt bikes. I need to learn about winning, tires, gas and dirt bike engines. Mommy said it’s called engineering and mechanics ... I want to go to college in West Virginia ... When I grow up, I want to learn engineering and be a hero for my family.”

Obuchowski’s scholarship comes from SMART 529 program administered through the state Treasurer’s office. The program invests the money in such a way that by the time Joseph is 18 years old, his $500 scholarship could be worth more than $200,000.
