Officials note importance of levy

FAIRMONT — The county commission started the ball rolling Wednesday on the next voter-initiated tax levy.

Since 1988, percentages of every tax dollar have been allotted to the Marion County Parks and Recreation Commission (MCPARC), the transit authority and the library through a countywide levy.

In the May 2010 primary, voters will likely have a chance to decide again on whether to fund these entities on their future tax bills. But with two other local levies set for the ballot and the current dismal state of the economy, officials are a little concerned about whether this levy will pass.

“We are pretty worried about the May election,” Marion County Library Director Erika Reed said.
