Christmas in Our Town celebration set in Barrackville
BARRACKVILLE — The streets of the town will be filled with Christmas cheer today for the annual Barrackville Christmas in Our Town celebration.
For many years, the town has gone all-out to celebrate the holiday season with a whole lot of fun, from food sales and informational displays, to the annual parade. It’s so much fun St. Nick takes a break from preparing for the biggest day of the year to come down and brings Mrs. Claus along.
Just like every year, Barrackville School plays a big role in the festivities. This year, almost every child will participate in the day in some way.
“Christmas brings out the child in all of us, and children are a big part of Barrackville’s Christmas in Our Town celebration,” principal Kevin Haugh said. “Each year our students participate in many of the scheduled activities including the grand parade down Pike Street.”

‘Awesome’ performances
The second Saturday in September always means the same thing: It’s time for the Fairmont Senior High School Band Spectacular.
This year, FSHS band director Shawn Dunn said 16 bands from around the region will fill East-West Stadium with music. -
Tallest flagpole in state planned
The City of Fairmont may soon be home to the tallest flagpole in the state.
This week, C. Rick Hardman, the designer of a developing Korean War Memorial at East Marion Park, gave a thorough presentation to county commissioners relaying the details of a planned $80,000 project to put up a 125-foot flagpole and 30 x 50-foot flag on the site. -
Larry Conaway Memorial Walk Sept. 11
Pam Conaway believes that her late husband of 38 years, Larry, “would be quite honored” by the memorial walk organized in Mannington.
“He dedicated most of his life to helping athletes and students, and especially the students who needed help who didn’t always have family support,” Pam said. -
High standards
Principal Chad Norman greets students as they come and go from the cafeteria at Fairmont Senior High School during lunch break.
The students are well behaved, courteous and able to offer a few quick comments about their principal.
“Mr. Norman sets a good example, a good leader — fair, firm and consistent,” said Alex Joseph, a senior. -
Supercomputer coming to Fairmont
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is bringing a new and powerful supercomputer to Fairmont.
In July, NOAA picked the West Virginia High Technology Consortium Foundation’s I-79 Technology Park Research Center in Fairmont as the site for this project. The lease contract became effective Tuesday. -
$10,000 received in copper settlement
A seven-month investigation into an alleged “copper caper” at the county jail has resulted in a stated victory for taxpayers in the form of a $10,000 insurance check.
The first of two expected payments the commissioners are looking to receive as part of ongoing efforts to replace and restore thousands of dollars worth of copper pipes at the historic downtown facility, a negotiated bond settlement for this amount was accepted by the commission Wednesday in a 2-1 majority. -

Fairmont resolution supports Project Lifesaver
One local group hopes a resolution from city council will be just the springboard they need.
Friends of Autism asked city council to approve a resolution in support of Project Lifesaver. After extensive discussion, the resolution passed unanimously, and council expressed a lot of interest in the program. -
Four sentenced in cocaine case; firearms plea accepted
Last week, U.S. District Judge Irene M. Keeley sentenced four members of a Morgantown-based “crack” cocaine distribution ring and accepted a federal firearms plea from a Fairmont man.

Moving to the beat
A catchy dance number has caught the eye of East Fairmont High School.
The dance employs elements of the Macarena and the Twist, but it will be far cooler looking when a flash mob of Bees’ students, teachers, staff, alumni and others move to the beat in unison during the big home game against University High School Friday. - More Local News Headlines
