Fairview Elementary’s ‘penny war’ raises $1,216 for St. Jude

FAIRVIEW — Sometimes, staging a complaint can benefit a lot of people.

Thanks to one complaint, Fairview Elementary’s annual penny drive to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital turned into the Great Fairview Elementary Penny War (to benefit St. Jude’s).

The result: The school raised six times as much money to benefit the hospital.

Principal Dick Werry said he’s proud of his students and teachers. The school of roughly 150 students raised $1,216.03 in about three weeks. That’s six times last year’s donation of roughly $200.

Three times during the drive, Werry made trips to First Exchange Bank to have the coins counted.
