FAIRMONT — About half of a Jackson Street city block will soon be the property of the county commission.
“This is probably the most significant acquisition of property the county has made in many, many decades,” Commission President Randy Elliott said of the $440,000 purchase of 211 and 213 Jackson St. and surrounding lots.
In late October, the commissioners entered executive session to discuss the deal, which was officially approved pending the transfer of deeds Wednesday night.
The property currently contains the building where the prosecuting attorney’s office is, which Elliott said the county has been leasing for the past year or so. It also contains the parking lot beside the prosecutor’s office, an additional duplex behind the office, another building that Elliott said will eventually be razed, and areas in between.
