FAIRMONT — Edith Closson has been serving food at the Union Mission for 40 years.
“I just enjoy working here. It’s a part of my life,” said Closson, 78, as she was placing turkey slices inside a styrofoam container on Thanksgiving.
During the past two weeks, Closson and at least 73 volunteers have been cooking turkeys and preparing for the big feast.
By Closson’s account, 56 turkeys were prepared in addition to 52 gallons of sweet potatoes, 43 gallons of string beans, 15 pans of dressing and 150 pumpkin pies each offering eight slices a piece (1,200 slices).
“This is our big day to show how much we care,” Closson said. “We have a special place in our heart for the people who come here.”
