City poised to get federal funding

Council takes steps to receive money for water plant

FAIRMONT — City council jockeyed with a couple of ordinances so the city would be in the pole position to get more federal dollars to pay for millions of dollars in repairs and improvements to the water-treatment plant.

City Hall also may be considering whether to take action to close a business in the Fourth Street area.

Council approved the second of three readings of an ordinance at Tuesday’s meeting authorizing the issuance of a series of bonds to cover the cost of the $12.1 million corrective action plan to permanently fix the city’s water-treatment plant.

Council also approved the first reading of a separate bond ordinance, which will allow the city to receive an additional $700,000 in stimulus money from the Bureau of Public Health. Half of that amount — roughly $350,000 — will be forgivable while the remaining $350,000 would be a 30-year note with zero percent interest.

    According to officials on scene, the fire began around 9:30 p.m. Fire rescue personnel were alerted after one of the victims, a woman, called her daughter to tell her that there was a fire in the house and that they could not get out.
