FAIRMONT — With the Passport program in full swing, seniors are getting their projects together, while coordinators at every school try to keep everyone on track.
Some students are really getting into the swing with innovative projects.
Heath Daniels is a student at North Marion High and the Marion County Technical Center who wants to be a coal miner after he graduates. Last year, he did a research paper on the history of coal mining. This year, he found a mentor — a retired coal miner — and is working on a project he hopes could be used to make the mines a safer place to work.
He’s actually building a model of a mantrip (a car that transports miners from one area of the mine to another) and putting a roof on it. At this time, most mantrips don’t have roofs, Daniels said. He also wants to add seat belts.

Spring paving under way
Some folks in the Friendly City are seeing a fresh coat of asphalt go down on the street in front of their homes.
City Manager Jay Rogers said Fairmont’s spring paving project will resurface two blocks of Gaston, Virginia and Minor avenues, as well as Moore Place from 12th Street to 14th Street. -
