FAIRMONT — With a split vote, the Marion County Board of Education has awarded a $715 stipend to most employees.
Board President the Rev. James Saunders, Vice President Dr. Babette Simms and Richard Pellegrin voted in favor of the measure, while members Mary “Sis” Murray and Mike Welty voted against.
The measure, dubbed the “Investment in School Employees Continuing Education Plan,” was voted upon separately at the MCBOE’s regular meeting Monday.
Superintendent of Schools Tom Deadrick said the money for the stipend comes from a budget line item of about $900,000, which was labeled for stipends. The move would stay within about $10,000 of that mark, Deadrick said.
“I know the budget is a concern, but we do have the funds budgeted for this purpose,” Deadrick said.
Saunders said he would support Deadrick’s decision. Saunders said when he discussed the measure with the superintendent, Deadrick called it a necessary morale-building measure.
