CONSOL helps ‘keep the lights on’

Company operates three coal mines in northern W.Va.

FAIRMONT — CONSOL “keeps the lights on” in North Central West Virginia and beyond.

CONSOL Energy Inc., headquartered in Canonsburg, Pa., has been in business for about 145 years. This Fortune 500 company primarily produces high-Btu bituminous coal and is also one of the largest natural gas producers in Appalachia, senior vice president Thomas Hoffman said.

He said CONSOL has several other related businesses. It is the largest shipping company on the upper Ohio River system, and has a big industrial supply company called Fairmont Supply. CONSOL has about 8,200 employees, with approximately 3,500 of those in West Virginia.

In addition to West Virginia, CONSOL has mines in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio and Utah. The company has gas operations in West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.
