Hines, Borden share World War II bond

FAIRMONT — When Howard J. Hines Sr. needs a haircut, he calls his good friend Willie Joe Borden. Borden will come to Hines’ home in Carolina and cut his hair.

Willie is 88 years old. Howard is 86. Both were members of the U.S. Army back in World War II — before integration was established. They became friends after the war had ended.

Both were in the segregated Army.

“I was in the Army 47 months and 13 days,” Borden says, with no special reason for why he knows the exact number of days.
