Resolution aims to create Miner’s Day

State lawmakers join efforts for national holiday

FAIRMONT — West Virginia’s federal representatives have given miners a reason to celebrate.

This week, U.S. Reps. Alan Mollohan (D-W.Va.), Nick J. Rahall (D-W.Va.), and Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and U.S. Sens. Robert C. Byrd and Jay Rockefeller (both D-W.Va.) jointly introduced a resolution in both houses of Congress to support the goals and ideals of a national Miner’s Day.

Three years ago, thanks to a grassroots effort, Dec. 6 was designated Miner’s Day in the state. The date is significant because it’s the date of the Monongah mine disaster, which occurred just over 100 years ago here in Marion County.

Now, the day may be going national.

    A Mannington man has been indicted by the Marion County grand jury on 14 counts of sexual abuse.
    James Edward Carpenter, 34, of 100 Parkview Drive, Apt. 101, Mannington, is charged with four counts of first-degree sexual abuse and 10 counts of sexual abuse by parent, guardian or custodian.

    A Fairmont man charged with forgery, uttering and other crimes is one of 23 people named in indictments handed down by the Marion County Grand Jury in its second day of deliberations Tuesday.
    Jeremy Nathan Ferraro, 31, Fairmont, was indicted on forgery; uttering; obtaining money, property or services by false pretenses; and domestic battery, third offense.
